What Is CASA?

Voices for Children, a CASA program of the Women's Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston County, Inc, is a non-profit organization which provides Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers to work with the abused and neglected children in Galveston County. These volunteers are trained and supervised by a professional staff member.

Voices for Children seeks to promote the welfare of the entire community by intervention into and prevention of abusive and neglectful family situations for children from birth to 17 years of age, of any race or socioeconomic background.

What is a CASA Volunteer?

CASA volunteers work alongside attorneys and social workers as appointed advocates for the court. When a CASA volunteer is appointed to a child's case, he or she is responsible for taking the time to find out as much as possible about the child. CASA volunteers search for information. They review records, interview parents, talk with teachers and neighbors, and most important, the child. These volunteers then appear in court to recommend what is best for the child's future.

Who can be a CASA Volunteer?

A CASA volunteer must be 21 years of age. The primary qualifications are:

  • Concern for Children;

  • Ability to make a responsible commitment;

  • Desire to help;

  • Maturity to understand and deal with complex emotional situations;

  • Ability to remain objective dedication to the premise that all children have basic rights;

  • Willingness to cooperate with other participants in the system;

  • Completion of a criminal history and Children's Protective Services background check;

What About Training Requirements?

A required 30 hour training program is provided for CASA volunteers. The average amount of time spent in casework is 3-4 hours per week. The need for bilingual, African-American and Hispanic volunteers is crucial.

Voices for Children volunteers come from all walks of life. They have a variety of professional, educational and ethnic backgrounds. Volunteers are selected on the basis of their objectivity, competence and commitment.
