What Is CASA?
What is a CASA Volunteer? CASA volunteers work alongside attorneys and social workers as appointed advocates for the court. When a CASA volunteer is appointed to a child's case, he or she is responsible for taking the time to find out as much as possible about the child. CASA volunteers search for information. They review records, interview parents, talk with teachers and neighbors, and most important, the child. These volunteers then appear in court to recommend what is best for the child's future. Who can be a CASA Volunteer? A CASA volunteer must be 21 years of age. The primary qualifications are:
What About Training Requirements? A required 30 hour training program is provided for CASA volunteers. The average amount of time spent in casework is 3-4 hours per week. The need for bilingual, African-American and Hispanic volunteers is crucial. |
